Ritalin & Other Drugs

Discontinuing Any Drugs
It's never a good idea to just stop taking any drug that the body has become adjusted to. This includes Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, and all other similar drugs. One way to do this is to cut the dosage in half for a week, then in half again for another week, and then cut it out. Watch for any withdrawal symptoms (flu type symptoms are most common).

WHAT'S WRONG WITH RITALIN?
Some children, of course, have problems so severe that drugs like Ritalin,Adderall, Concerta, and Strattera, have been a godsend for those mid and low income families that simply cannot afford EEG biofeedback training. Up to now, those families have been literally "forced" to put their children on Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, and others. There is no such thing as a drug of any kind without side effects, and all these drugs are addictive at best!!

But that has little to do with the most obvious reason millions of American children are taking Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, and Strattera, compliance. One day at a time, the drug continues to make children do what their parents and teachers either will not or cannot get them to do without it: Sit down, shut up, keep still, pay attention. In short, Ritalin is a cure for childhood." -- Mary Eberstadt (Reading, Writing, and Ritalin) Did you know that schools actually get paid by Big Pharma for using Ritalin and others on kids?

The following articles are only the tip of the iceberg. Using "Ritalin" as a search word turned up over 50,000 references. Most of these cite known dangers. Every parent who has an ADD/ADHD child, and is considering the use of Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, or other drugs, should read all this information FIRST!

* On September 29, 2005, The FDA directed Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly), the manufacturer of Strattera (atomoxetine), to revise the prescribing information to include a boxed warning and additional warning statements that alert health careproviders of an increased risk of suicidal thinking in children and adolescents being treated with this medication.

FDA also informed Lilly that a Patient Medication Guide (MedGuide) should be provided to patients when Strattera is dispensed. The MedGuide advises patients of the risks associated with and precautions that can be taken when Strattera is dispensed. Further, pediatric patients being treated with Strattera should be closely observed for clinical worsening, as well as agitation, irritability, suicidal thinking or behaviors and unusual changes in behavior, especially during the initial few months of a course of drug therapy, or at times of dose changes, either increases or decreases.
